Draft suicide prevention strategy open for public consultation

Every year in New Zealand more than 500 people die by suicide and many more attempt it. This has a devastating impact on the lives of friends, families and colleagues.

It’s important to remember that suicide is preventable. Now you can have a say on how we as a country can take action to reduce suicidal behaviour and increase the wellbeing of all New Zealanders.The New Zealand Suicide Prevention Strategy 2006–2016 has come to an end and the Ministry of Health has developed a new strategy which is open for consultation until June 12.A Strategy to Prevent Suicide in New Zealand: Draft for public consultation outlines a framework for how we can work together to prevent suicide and also identifies a set of priority areas for action.Some of the proposed strategies include encouraging safe and responsible conversations around suicide, further work to reduce stigma around mental illness and suicide and more help for parents and families.How to provide feedbackThe consultation period is open until Monday, 12 June 2017 at 11pm.Information about making a submission can be found in the online submission form.You can also make a written submission by emailing suicideprevention@moh.govt.nz or mail a hard copy to:Suicide Prevention Strategy ConsultationMinistry of HealthPO Box 5013Wellington 6140

Public consultation meetingsPublic consultation meetings will be held in various locations across the country. Please register for the meetings.Targeted meetingsA range of targeted meetings related to particular population groups, such as Māori, Pacific and LGBTIQ, are also being held.
